Staying the course

The past month has been a learning experience. One thing that continues to come to mind is the value of persistence. I see what changes when someone gives up and when someone continues to work towards their goal. Here is a snippet from Jeffery Gitomer’s website about a chapter in the book Think Grow Rich. I never had any intention of reading this book before, but now have it on my list because of this great information.

How to Develop Persistence
There are four simple steps which lead to the habit of persistence, They call for no great amount of intelligence, no particular amount of education, and but little time or effort. The necessary steps are:

1. A definite purpose backed by burning desire for its fulfillment.
2. A definite plan, expressed in continuous action.
3. A mind closed tightly against all negative and discouraging influences, including negative suggestions of relatives, friends and acquaintances.
4. A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.

After reading this, I decided that yes, these steps really are necessary in order to achieve your goals. This is why we have guidance counselors in school. Everyone needs some type of roadmap to their goals.

So here I sit, missing home, reminding myself to stay persistent. There is nothing like being around people you love. Or simply being around people with the same mindset as yourself. But for now, I am staying the course and working towards my goal.
