Look, I don’t take like too seriously. Why should I stress about X or Y when I could be enjoying a cup of hot cocoa with my family? I live my life one day at a time and try not to get caught up in the busyness of this world. I also learned a long time ago not to let other people’s opinion of me change how I feel about myself. I live my life the way I want to. I am my own person.
This is why Legally Blonde is one of my favorite movies. If you are not familiar with the movie, do a quick internet search. I’ll be here…
…K, now that you are up to speed, I will continue my point. Elle Woods is seen by the outside world as “too blonde.” She likes fashion, cares about hair and makeup, majored in fashion, and is good looking. Now, some people have the opinion that those values are limiting and even stupid. However, Elle Woods breaks the stereotype people, even her boyfriend, have of her. She’s not a dumb girl who is only good for fashion advice. Elle Woods is smart and determined. She shows us that you can be an intelligent person and still be girly.
Granted, Elle does decide to go to law school because of a guy, but she studies all year to get the LSAT score needed to get into law school. She gives up the fun of senior year for books. Elle’s friends fully support her decision and are always there for her. Even her guidance counselor supports her decision by coming up with a game plan.
I love every scene in the movie where people allude to Elle being dumb, a joke, or just too blonde. Why? Because Elle always proves that first impressions aren’t always correct. Elle gets into Harvard. She gets her law degree. Even though Elle goes to DC looking like a career Barbie, when everyone else wears black, she puts in work and gets the job done. Yes, that’s technically referring to Legally Blonde 2, but you get the point.
Legally Blonde reminds us that you can be yourself in any world you end up in. People will try to impose their opinions of you on your perception of yourself. But you can still be the person you are and succeed. You can still be a strong, empowered woman and look good doing it! Be yourself.
